WHAT MAKES A CAT COLLAR SAFE?

A guide to choosing the right cat collar

Cats are tiny, fluffy escape artists.

They climb trees, squeeze through gaps, treat fences as suggestions and disappear behind the couch the second you need to leave for the vet.

We love them for it. But if your cat wears a collar, all that curiosity makes one thing especially important: the collar needs to be designed with safety in mind.

So, how do you choose the right one? Let’s get into it.

What is the safest type of collar for a cat?

The safest option is generally a quick-release or breakaway collar.

Unlike a fixed buckle, a breakaway buckle is designed to open when enough force is applied. If your cat’s collar becomes caught on a branch, fence or other object, the buckle gives them a way to pull free.

Yes, this means your cat may occasionally arrive home without their collar after adventuring a little too hard. Annoying? A little. Better than remaining caught? Absolutely.

Remember that a collar is not a replacement for microchipping. A microchip provides permanent identification, even if the collar comes off during one of your cat’s secret missions.

Are all breakaway collars the same?

Not quite. Breakaway buckles can require different amounts of force before they open. But a tiny 3 kg cat and a chunky 9 kg cat don’t weigh the same, so why should they automatically have the same release setting?

That question led to the ROGZ variable load SafeLoc buckle.

The buckle includes a small red slider with three variable load settings, allowing pet parents to adjust the release load according to their cat’s approximate weight.

It’s a little red slider with a very important job.

This safety feature has been part of ROGZ cat collars for more than 15 years.

HOW does the rogz safeloc buckle work?

The red SafeLoc slider can be moved between three settings:

  • Around 3 kg / 6.6 lbs: move the slider to the right.
  • Around 5 kg / 11 lbs: position the slider in the middle.
  • Around 9 kg / 19.8 lbs: move the slider to the left.

If the collar becomes caught and enough pressure is applied, the buckle is designed to open and release the cat from the collar.

These weight settings are a guide, not a guarantee. Every cat is different, so their size, behaviour and lifestyle should always be considered when choosing and setting up a collar.

HOW SHOULD A CAT COLLAR FIT?

Here’s an easy rule to remember: two fingers, snugly fitted.

You should be able to slide two fingers between your cat’s neck and the collar. Too tight and it may be uncomfortable. Too loose and your cat may be able to get a paw, leg or jaw underneath it.

Check the fit again after your cat has worn the collar for a few minutes. Cats have a special talent for hunching, stretching and suddenly forgetting how their bodies normally work when something new is put on them.

It’s also worth checking the fit regularly, especially if your cat is still growing or their weight changes.

DOES MY CAT NEED A REFLECTIVE COLLAR?

If your cat explores outdoors, reflective material can make them easier to spot in low-light conditions.

The ROGZ ReflectoCat Safety Collar combines highly reflective material with the variable load SafeLoc buckle. In other words, it helps your cat stand out while still being designed to break away if necessary.

And it turns out we’re not the only ones who think that’s clever.

In 2026, Business Insider tested 24 cat collars by cutting, soiling, washing and pulling them. The review also included input from veterinarians and cat behaviour consultants.

The collar named Best Overall? ROGZ ReflectoCat.

The reviewer highlighted its durability, reflective material and adjustable breakaway buckle, calling it the most safety-conscious and versatile collar tested.

That’s a pretty big win for one little collar.

WHAT IF MY CAT HAS SENSITIVE SKIN?

Some cats are fearless explorers. Others are professional nappers who simply demand maximum comfort.

Safety isn’t only about the buckle. The material sitting against your cat’s neck matters too, and pet parents should regularly check for rubbing, irritation or hair loss underneath the collar.

For cats who prefer the softer things in life, ROGZ UrbanCat uses soft plush webbing together with the same variable load SafeLoc buckle.

Business Insider noticed this too. While ReflectoCat was named Best Overall, the reviewer recommended the ROGZ UrbanCat Safety Collar as the softer alternative for cats that may be sensitive to collar materials.

ROGZ CATS SAFETY KEEPS GETTING NOTICED

We’ve been designing pet gear for a long time. But saying our own products are clever isn’t quite the same as having other people put them to the test.

In 2024, the ROGZ Cat Safety Release Collar won Gold at the PetQuip Awards for Product of the Year – Accessories & Technical.

The judges highlighted the patented variable SafeLoc fastener and the ability to adjust the buckle’s release tension.

Then, in 2026, Business Insider independently tested 24 cat collars and named ROGZ ReflectoCat the Best Overall Cat Collar.

2024: recognised by the pet industry.

Different judges. Different tests.

Same smart ROGZ safety innovation.

Which rogz collar is right for my cat?

Every cat is different, so start with safety and then think about what suits yours:

  • For outdoor explorers: added reflectivity may be useful.
  • For sensitive cats: look for softer materials and comfortable webbing.
  • For confident characters: choose a design that matches their personality.
  • For every cat: check the fit and select the appropriate SafeLoc setting.

At ROGZ, we encourage pet parents to choose gear according to their pet’s size, behaviour and the function required.

Because the best cat collar isn’t simply the one that looks good.

It’s the one that lets your cat keep doing cat things, more safely.
