UNIQUE EDUCATION CAMPAIGN A HIT

Rogz Academy Volunteer Programmes over the years

Since 2013, volunteers from Rogz Academy have assisted teachers by offering extra reading and writing sessions to learners, with special attention given to Grade 3 and 4 learners. These sessions are given through the implementation of the YearBeyond programme. Rogz Academy empowers a team of young people (YeBoneers) who go into under-resourced schools in Dunoon and Joe Slovo and assist teachers with helping learners transition learning literacy and numeracy in their home language to English.

New Edu campaign kicks off

In February 2022, Rogz Academy launched a fun new education campaign to add to this drive, called RA4ABAFUNDI. It involves empowering children with life skills, teaching them new English words, and using art to bring a bit of fun whilst learning!

The campaign has since rolled out over four topics spread out over the year. Each learner receives a leaflet with information outlined in six steps in both English and isiXhosa. The front of the leaflet has colourful illustrations and words and the back has a fun black and white illustration for the children to colour in. The leaflets focused on different topics so that the learners slowly increased their English vocabulary on a variety of life skills. The campaign is meant to be engaging and fun, and is an added fun aspect to the wonderful YearBeyond programme already in place. Apart from the education benefits, the learners also get to practise their art skills.

How to Love Your Dog

In Term 1, to celebrate the month of love, February’s topic was “How to Love Your Dog.” As the non-profit of Rogz pet gear, Rogz Academy knew it would be a great start! The aim was to educate children from under-resourced communities on how to take care of their pets, with an emphasis on love. The new group of YeBoneers started their 2022 literacy and numeracy programmes and used these RA4ABAFUNDI leaflets as an “ice-breaker” to help get to know their new group of learners. The learners could see the English word with the isiXhosa word and were able to read the words to themselves and out aloud to the YeBoneer, reinforcing a new English vocabulary around loving pets.

How to Stay Strong and Healthy

Leaflets on “How to Stay Strong and Healthy” were handed out as part of an Apple Drive. One-hundred-and-eighty bags of fresh local apples were handed out to every Rogger to take home in Dunoon and Joe Slovo to enjoy with their communities. A lovely way to connect our focus areas of education, youth development and nutrition!

How to Celebrate Heritage Day

Rolled out in conjunction with South Africa’s Heritage Day celebrations in September, learners had fun understanding new English words associated with their heritage, whilst colouring-in a cute drawing and also enjoying a surprise local South African sweetie donated by Rogz Academy. The learners also celebrated by singing the national anthem with pride! Who says learning can’t be fun?

How To Be Good and Kind

The final topic for the year was a focus on gratitude and kindness. How To Be Good and Kind leaflets helped to engage the learners with new English words, reinforcing ways to show respect and choosing to be good and kind. The learners also coloured-in a lineart drawing and some will be used on our ‘Thank You’ card which will be sent to Rogz Academy Platinum Partners. A lovely way for the children to show thankfulness!
