MEGAN’S ROGZ ACADEMY INTERN STORY

The new year brings in new opportunities for many people and businesses, and the same can be said for Rogz Academy.

Megan McKechnie joined the Rogz Academy team for two weeks, working on the design of assets for Rogz Academy. Megan’s work breathed new life into the Rogz Academy social media, Rogz Academy NPO Profile and Rogz Academy web page.

Here is Megan’s story:

A little background

The time I spent at Rogz Academy formed part of my internship credits for my BA degree in Visual Communication. When first briefed on our internships I felt a little lost. I wasn’t sure how to find my place in the industry or what work I wanted to create that would be delivered into the world. Over the course of last year I started investigating the education environment in South Africa with a focus on the Western Cape. I worked on multiple projects including both practical work and a theoretical analysis of foundation phase education.

Why I approached Rogz Academy

I decided that I wanted to volunteer my time at an NGO or non-profit organisation (NPO) that worked within this space. This led me to Rogz Academy as their purpose is to empower local communities in the spirit of ubuntu through education, youth development and nutrition for a sustainable future together. Actually, this was not my first introduction to Rogz Academy as my family decided to donate our jungle gym to Sophokama Primary a while ago. In an unpredicted twist of fate, I have ended up volunteering at the academy 10 years later.

Support from the Marketing Team

Under the guidance of the formidable Brigitte and Talisa, I Iearnt more than I could have ever imagined. I’m honestly not sure how I’ve made it through the last three years without using all the type settings in InDesign… There is something that has left a lasting impression on me that goes far beyond any of the physical work created within the Marketing Department, it’s how the team supports each other.

Everyone encouraged each other and was willing to help out at any time, always with a smile. Looking back I am still surprised that I managed to get through as many projects as I did. I know I would not have been able to do it without Talisa’s supervision, mentorship and design tips.

Rogz Urban Farm and Rogz Dogz

Driving past the gorgeous veggie garden and the sunflowers every morning guaranteed that I started my day with a smile before I had even stepped into the office. A little visit from Mango, the unofficial Canine Executive Officer,  while I had my morning coffee soon became a part of my morning routine. He kept a close eye on me and popped in for little cuddles throughout the day.

A full heart

I would like to thank Lee, Irené and Annie for making my time at Rogz Academy possible and to the entire Marketing team for making my time at Rogz Headquarters so special. I walked away from Rogz Academy with a full heart.

Thank you Megan!

We want to say a big thank you to Megan for all her valuable contributions. It was a pleasure to have you as part of the team.
